Online Resources for Literary Texts

Hello everyone!
Most of you would've received the course materials by now. So I hope you've started reading. But first, read the letter and the Handbook sent to you along with the course materials.
For the two literature courses in Part I of the programme, you must try to get hold of the prescribed texts and read them before you start reading the material. That is, before you start reading a Unit, see what texts the Unit discusses, get hold of them, read them, and keep them alongside while reading the course materials. You fill find that the study material will make a lot of sense this way!
Most of these texts are readily and freely available online, and anyone who can do a google search should be able to find reliable versions. In any case, here are some good web sites where you can can search for and download these texts, whether poems, plays, or novels:

Even otherwise, these prescribed texts are well-known canonical texts and should be available in any good library. So do visit a library in a university or college in your town/city. You should certainly be able to photocopy individual poems and plays.
So get cracking!

  3. Respected Madam,
Thanks for the post as it is very informative and useful for everyone but I have a small concern which i would like to bring to your notice, I had been to University few weeks back for collecting the remaining course material with respect to this academic year and during this visit of mine to the University I had enquired regarding the facilities that we could avail as students of distance mode. After asking few people I realised that distance students could not use the library facilities, which actually is very important thing. I am sure there would be many people who would have enrolled from the City(Hyderabad)and it would be of great boon to them if they were given the facility to have access to all amenities in the University. If you could have a look into this matter and kindly update us on the same. I am sure it will be of great help not only to me but to everyone who intends to exploit the opportunity.

    2. Rohit,

Did you esquire at the library? It is not that distance-mode students cannot use the University ibrary. You can certainly visit the library and read books and journals. You are not permitted to borrow books, that's all.

Please go to the library with your ID; you will be asked to pay a fee of 100 Rs. after which you can certainly sit in the library and read. If you are in Hyderabad, you should plan to be there on a Saturday or Sunday very early in the morning, so you can sit through the day, search for books that you want and photo-copy whatever you think is important.

  5. Dear Madam,

After going through the Assignments, I am clueless on how much I have to write for each questions given in the assignment sheet. Neither marks nor word limit mentioned anywhere. Could you please give me an idea?

    Thanks & Regards

      Good question.

For the first two batches of this MA programme, we did prescribe a word limit for each of the questions in the assignments. But my experience has been that just about no one adheres to that word limit. And those who did were just doing so technically, that is, trying to limit the words without making the answer relevant to the question! And we can't really give you a good grade just for sticking to the word limit if your answer does not quite cover the scope of the question!!

Whic is why I decided to drop the word limit for this course.

But to answer your question - the question is not 'how much to write' but 'what to write'. That is, quantity is not as important as quality. The only thumb-rule is relevance; your answer should be relevant to, focussed on the question. What/how much you should write to answer a question- well, that is for you to decide, based on the scope of the question and that's partly also what we're testing. We're not just testing how much you can write but how relevant your answers are.

However, if you still feel that you need something more specific, I can give you some rough guidelines as to what would constitute a relevant answer to one of the questions - a kind of 'model answer' without actually giving away the answer! Let me know and I'll rustle up a blog post on this in the next couple of days.
